You’d think after five years of doing this, we would’ve killed each other by now. Yet here we are locked in yet another battle for the city. I guess I’m getting ahead of myself. First I guess introductions are in order. I am called the Blue Guardsman, some might call me a superhero. I’ve never cared for the term myself.

Regardless I stand guard over the city against whatever threats come my way. Ever since that whole asteroid experiment incident that gave me superpowers, but this isn’t my origin story.* This story is about him. The Black raider.

For the past five years he has stormed into the city, smashed up some cars and buildings, made overly dramatic speeches about how dangerous and powerful he is, and how the world would soon be his. You know typical badguy stuff.

He has to be the most powerful adversary in my rogues’ gallery. His powers are a perfect match for mine, we duke it out on the city streets until I finally get the better of him. He’ll toss of a line about I haven’t seen the last of him, and he’ll get me next time, before vanishing.

The curious thing about the Black raider is he never really tries anything new. It’s always the same thing, destruction, monologue, fight, retreat. Even more curious I actually seem to look forward to those battles with him, I feel like I don’t have to pull my punches with him like I do with common criminals.

Finally one night as we were struggling against one another I asked him.

“Why do you persist? Why don’t you ever change your tactics up?”

Beneath his face mask he seemed shocked but he shocked me even more with his response.

“Why don’t you ever chase after me and finish me off?”

I honestly couldn’t answer him.

“I don’t know,”

We stopped our struggles and just regarded one another. Finally he spoke.

“I actually don’t want to beat you, if I killed you there’d be no one left to challenge me. With you gone there’d just be police and national guard to contend with, and really theres no thrill in killing those less powerful than me.”

Now this was certainly a curious statement.

“But aren’t you a villain? What about all those speeches you make?”

He chuckled, “Well it is sort of fun. But really other than property damage I’ve never really intentionally killed anyone. I’ve just fought you.”

“So you don’t want to kill me?” I asked.

“If I killed you I’d die of boredom.”

I thought about this, then I spoke. “Well if I killed you or put you away for good there’d be no one who could challenge me. Just bank robbers and gangsters, really they don’t present a challenge.”

Black Raider nodded, “Yeah, so you see we can’t live without each other, plus this is the only time we actually get to push ourselves.”

He turned away, “Ugh, I don’t feel like fighting right now. I’ll see you later, let’s just say you beat me again and leave it at that.”

I grunted, “Of course,”

When he had gone I sighed, “Farewell my only friend.”

*Origin story in issue NO1 of Blue Guardsman

A writing prompt for Writers-Tique. PROMPT: "You'd think after five years of doing this, we would've killed each other by now."

For his I decided to make a superhero fighting his arch nemesis, the prompt I try to take in a different direction. Also I fail at superhero names.
